God will, but I won't

I've been a Lyle Lovett fan since the late 80s, when we got a few of his albums to play in our new cd player. The hair, the smile, the crooked sense of humor, even his name - the man was born to sing the American story. I lucked out and got to see him as part of a 3 songwriter showcase a few years ago at Ruby Diamond Auditorium thanks to a friend with connections. Hell of a night!

Well, when I found out he was coming back this year for 7 Days of Opening Nights, I had to price tickets. Are you fucking kidding me? Upwards of $80 for a few hours of music? I know, that's not too pricey for a mainstream concert, but that doesn't make it okay. How do you people who go to these things justify that? Is it a matter of only going out to see live music once a year? Have I just been so broke for so long that what looks like a massive bill to me is just an evening on the town to the average Lovett fan?

And, most importantly, who wants to buy me a ticket?

God does but I don't. And that's the difference between God and me.
I won't be going either.
Sigh.

Y'all really should figured out a way to go. You could put on your silver bangles.

It's too much.

That's what I think, too.

Do you remember when he married Julia Roberts and her family made t-shirts that said something like, "We love him Darling, but what is up with his hair?"

I'd forgot all about that. I think it was the crew of the movie she was working on.

"And if I had a boat, I'd go out on the ocean. And if I had a pony, I'd ride it on my boat . . ."

One of my faves!

and we would all together go out on the ocean, me up on my pony on my boat.

I love that one, too.

I agree, it's too dang much. And yet, for concert prices for big name acts... probably not so much. Although, ironically, Marc and I just saw his old college roommate and buddy, Robert Earl Keen Jr, at the moon for a mere 25 bucks a head.

What I HATE is seven days used to be SEVEN DAYS OF DANCE... and students actually performed. I know this because I had a friend who was a dance major. It was so great! I believe it was for students and their fams and was very moderately priced. Now it seems as though, FSU has changed their whole format, going for the baby boomers with money crowd and the rest of us be damned. They are totally about the money and status in my opinion.

How about if we all chip in 10 or 15 bucks and get you a tick. That is really doable! AND.. you deserve it! If that comes together, count me in for 15. Hey, when's your birthday anyway?

I was totally kidding about someone buying me a ticket! I would feel all kinds of guilty.

It's just money. There are a lot of things that cost $80 and aren't worth it such as...
a walmart bike
a towed vehicle
a bad hotel
2 tickets to hank Jr.
a month of cable
20 lattes
half a dental appt. for a 5yr old
a betty boop tattoo

But Lyle, he's worth it.

I don't know last time you priced Bocephus tickets, but he's no cheaper than Lyle (less worth it, though, you're right). My main problem is that there are things that cost $80 that I can't afford regularly anyway, and these are:
- a month's worth of dinners
- just under 1/4th of my rent
- half my utilities
- a month of car insurance

Let's not even talk about dental work and new tattoos.

but none are as fun, nobody looks back and thinks nostalgically about rent. c'mon, sell some plasma, or make a coke deal "just this once".

I'll chip in as well.

Magnum! "Make a coke deal just this once"? Really?!

(Um, you don't have the start-up cash and know somebody, do you? Just askin'.)

Children! Behave! Don't you remember what I've taught you? There are good drugs and there are bad drugs. And you know the difference!

That Hank said...

No kidding, coke's an asshole drug. Now, I might know where someone can get some pills...

I'm in for $15, too. You're almost half-way there.

You got a PayPal account?

That Hank said...

Heck, y'all. It might even be sold out.

But no, no paypal - mama might have an account?

Erin said...

Hope you can scrounge up the cash, he puts on a great show. What's your favorite Lyle song?

For the record, I don't like Coke, I just like the way it smells.

and May,

call me (thumb and pinky extended on my hand next to my ear-wiggling)

don't tell your mama

gingermagnolia: I don't even know! How about pretty much the entire LL and His Large Band album.

Eggggggggcellent. I can't tell you how many times in my lifetime I've heard those songs, but they never get old.

That Hank said...

And there ain't a whole lot of musicians you can say that about.
